Kigali Urban Refugee Community Celebrates International Women’s Day – 9 March 2026

The Kigali Urban refugee and asylum seeker community commemorated International Women’s Day 2026 today at Gikondo Community Center, celebrated under Rwanda’s national theme “UMUGORE NI UWAGACIRO” (A Woman is of Great Value).

Although the global celebration falls on 8 March, this year’s event was observed on 9 March due to the weekend.

Key Highlights of the Event

The ceremony brought together refugees, asylum seekers, community leaders, and humanitarian partners including UNHCR, Save the Children, and Prison Fellowship Rwanda (PFR).

  • PFR welcomed participants and emphasized the importance of recognizing women’s value and dignity.
  • UNHCR and Save the Children highlighted the central role of women in society and reaffirmed their commitment to advancing women’s empowerment within refugee communities.
  • The PFR Legal Coordinator delivered an important session on legal awareness, focusing on the rights and empowerment of women and girls.
  • The event was made vibrant through traditional songs and performances from DRC, Burundi, and Sudan, celebrating cultural diversity and unity.
