Nyabiheke Refugee Camp Celebrates Progress in Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment
As part of ongoing efforts to promote gender equity, gender equality, and women’s rights, a series of vibrant and impactful activities took place today at Nyabiheke Refugee Camp. The event brought together women, persons with specific needs (PwS), community leaders, and partners in a unified celebration of empowerment and inclusion.
One of the major highlights of the day was a football match between women PwS and women partners, aimed at strengthening confidence, teamwork, and solidarity among participants. Alongside the sports activities, women in the camp took part in workshops on self‑reliance and self‑management, focusing on building essential skills that contribute to personal growth, economic stability, and long‑term empowerment.
At the heart of today's celebrations, seven PwS couples officially officiated their marriages, marking an important milestone in strengthening family bonds and promoting dignity and social cohesion within the community.
The event also included a special recognition ceremony honoring individuals and groups who have made significant contributions to advancing women’s rights, protection, and empowerment in Nyabiheke Camp. Their dedication continues to play a vital role in creating a more inclusive and supportive environment for women and girls.
These activities reflect the ongoing commitment to uplift women, promote equality, and ensure that every woman—regardless of background—has the opportunity to thrive and participate meaningfully in community life.
