International Women’s Day Celebrated with Burundian Refugee Community in Huye

On 12 March 2026, Prison Fellowship Rwanda, in partnership with UNHCR and in collaboration with Save the Children, organized an International Women’s Day celebration in Huye City with the participation of the Burundian refugee community.

The event brought together representatives from the Ngoma District Executive leadership, UNHCR officials, humanitarian partners, and community members to recognize the important contributions of women within refugee communities.

During the opening session, leaders emphasized the importance of empowering refugee women, strengthening protection mechanisms, and promoting community resilience.

The celebration featured speeches on women’s rights, leadership, and protection, as well as inspiring testimonies from refugee women who shared their achievements and daily challenges. Cultural performances also showcased the rich heritage of the Burundian community.

One of the key highlights of the event was the recognition and awarding of exemplary women who have demonstrated leadership, resilience, and dedication in supporting their community. The awards aimed to encourage and motivate continued positive contributions among women in the refugee community.

The event successfully celebrated women’s achievements while reinforcing the commitment of partners—including Prison Fellowship Rwanda, UNHCR, and Save the Children—to support refugee women’s empowerment and wellbeing.

The celebration fostered unity, recognition, and hope among the Burundian refugee community in Huye.
