Celebration of World Refugee Day at Nyabiheke Refugee Camp
Nyabiheke Refugee Camp, Rwanda – 23 June 2023
Prison Fellowship Rwanda (PFR), serving as the lead organization, in partnership with the Ministry in Charge of Emergency Management (MINEMA), UNHCR, and other implementing and operational partners, successfully commemorated World Refugee Day at Nyabiheke Refugee Camp under the global theme “Until Everyone is Safe.”
This significant event was combined with the celebration of the Day of the African Child, held under the theme “Positive Parenting for Every Child: Promoting Child Wellbeing and Ending Violence.” The dual commemoration underscored the importance of safeguarding the rights and wellbeing of both displaced populations and children.
The event brought together People We Serve, government representatives, humanitarian agencies, and community stakeholders. The Guest of Honor from Gatsibo District, alongside the camp manager, UNHCR field representative, and refugee representatives, delivered key messages emphasizing protection, inclusion, and resilience.
A key highlight of the day was a panel discussion facilitated by PFR focusing on critical socioeconomic challenges within the camp, particularly unemployment and drug abuse. Participants also shared compelling success stories about safety, personal growth, and resilience.
The celebration featured vibrant cultural performances, poetry, and entertainment led by People We Serve, as well as the recognition of outstanding individuals identified for their positive contributions within the community.
The commemoration followed a week-long awareness campaign addressing pressing socioeconomic issues in Nyabiheke Camp. Activities included basketball and football tournaments and community outreach initiatives conducted across the camp, engaging residents in dialogue and advocacy.
This event reaffirmed the collective commitment of PFR and its partners to promote dignity, protection, and sustainable solutions for refugees, ensuring that truly, no one is left behind until everyone is safe.
